These two pieces use 256 individually printed pixel elements because in digital images 256 is a significant number representing the most common base unit in computing. Each pixel is inkjet printed onto dictionary pages, a nod to this work being a transition. I picked a pile and a landscape as images to pixelate. The pile primarily conveys accumulation and quantity, effective as an analogy for bits of data. The landscape image is more personal, it’s a photograph of the field behind my childhood home, a forbidden place that looms large one’s memory. Can you translate such an emotional place, a sensory place, into bits of data? I doubt it. This pile of text is equal to the birthweight of my two children, eight and a half pounds. Cut up text inevitably also symbolizes sadness, loss and grief. Cutting up a dictionary letter by letter is largely about a search for meaning. These thousands of letters that should provide meaning but instead create a ludicrous unsolvable puzzle. How is meaning constructed and where is it housed? The text dust is held in a small “pouch” that is created by a thin layer of transparent paper in front, printed to look like an exaggerated skin. Scars, orifices, bruises and the subtle transitions of flesh are colors to look through. The text in each print is illegible in most areas and focused in others; it is in these areas of focus that the words for the titles emerge. These 49 plates were etched for various times ranging from one day for the first plate, 2 days for the second, up to 49 days for the last plate. The outermost row (the plates from 26-49 days) shows the more dramatic effects of time which are visibly recorded on the eroded surfaces of the steel plates. The plates are a floor, meant to be walked on. In this piece, objects that suggest an archive (a manila folder, a filing cabinet, a briefcase) feature prominently. I imagine that the ocean, in its vastness and with its repetition, is in some ways like an archive. The water and the waves are the events but also the only place for the recordkeeping.
